Walnut Valley Quilters Guild
October Meeting: October 11, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 2448 Edgemont Dr., Arkansas City
Our October Quilt Guild speaker will be Karen Malnar from Golden, Mo. Originally she
was a Kansas girl from Neodesha, KS. She graduated from the St. Francis School of
Nursing in Wichita in 1968. During her varied nursing career, she worked for: the team
who did the first open heart surgery in Wichita, the Mid American All Indian Center.
Was the liaison with the City to develop the first medical clinic and wrote the grant that
expanded the Indian clinic. Though there were other places – she spent her final 16
years at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Tulsa, establishing the first
breast cancer data base in the State and developing research interest in patient care
Karen retired from the College of Medicine holding appointments in both the Department
of Surgery and the Department of Family Medicine as an Assistant Professor and co-Director
of their Research Sections.
Karen is married to Tom and has two spectacular children. Sewing and quilting were never
a part of her life until her husband retired to Table Rock Lake and Karen thought she best go
with him. The rest is history, as they say. She is in three quilt guilds in Missouri and credits
the members of those guilds teaching her everything she knows. She has had three quilts
juried into Paducah and one juried into The Road to California show, which won Viewer’s
Choice in spite of a glaring mistake
Karen will be speaking on her favorite applique method, English Paper Piecing, and
sharing her tips and expertise on making her prize quilts. We will be meeting at the First
United Methodist Church, 2448 Edgemont Dr Arkansas City, October 11. We invite everyone
to come early that day at 1:30 p.m. for a workshop with Karen, with the meeting at our usual
